My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. — Psalm 42:2
We are thirsty…thirsty for the living God! Gallup Poll surveys of Americans report that 82% express they “experience in their lives a need for spiritual growth” (from The Next American Spirituality: Finding God in the Twenty-first Century). To this end Water from Rock Ministries, Inc. was established to assist thirsty people in their longing for God toward experiencing His heart-felt reality in their lives.
Our name, Water from Rock, is inspired by the Exodus story of God’s people coming to a place in the wilderness where there was no water for them to drink. It was to a thirsty, discouraged people that God commanded: You shall bring water from rock for the community (Numbers 20:8, and water gushed from dry, desert rock.
So it is for our spiritually thirsty generation that this ministry looks to Jesus Christ, the living water, to refresh and renew us in our life journeys. Spiritual renewal has always been marked by a faithful, Biblical theology and a heart-felt faith; thus, Water from Rock is committed to bringing together sound, Biblical thought and a vital experience of God. We find Jesus’ refreshment in the Scriptures as well as in the spiritual practices of Christ and his church, such as prayer, meditation, retreat, study, and community. We are an interdenominational ministry seeking to draw from the great riches of historic Christian spirituality and disciplines.

Rooted in the Word
We are a ministry of Christian renewal rooted in the Living Word, Jesus Christ, as He reveals Himself through His Written Word, the Bible. Through the Written Word we encounter the Living Word in the incomprehensible wonder of His love. We are mindful that knowledge, even of the Bible, “puffs up” while love “builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). We engage the Scriptures seeking to love more and know more of love. We purpose to search out God’s Word with both our minds and our hearts.
Ecumenical in Outlook
We honor all followers of Christ who have gone before us, and all who are among us now. We have much to learn and receive from all who have a lived experience of God’s transforming love. By reaching out to embrace the universal Body of Christ we strive to balance orthodoxy (right belief) and right living (orthopraxy).
In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.
(Rupertus Meldenius, 1582 – 1651)
Experiencing the Living God
We thirst to know God and not just to know about Him. We long for a living experience of God. We believe that God breaks into our world on the holy ground of His Word, and seek through His Spirit a living encounter with Him there. We daily aim to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength (Mark 12:30).
Dr. Timothy Smith
Water from Rock Ministries, Founder and Executive Director, Rev. Dr. Timothy Smith, has dedicated much of his life to helping people grow in intimacy with God and experiencing spiritual renewal. During his 35 years of ministering to people from various backgrounds as an ordained minister, chaplain (hospital, hospice, and prison) spiritual director, adjunct seminary professor, and retreat leader, Tim has experienced firsthand the renewing power of Jesus Christ. And his many experiences of renewal have taught him the need for connecting an intelligent biblical faith to a warm, heart-felt devotion to God. We must be people of head and heart, together.
Thus, in his teaching and ministry, Tim focuses on laying a biblical foundation for faith, along with training in the spiritual practices that Christ and his Church have pursued. In seeking renewal for our day, Tim draws upon the disciplines and vitality that shape the various streams of Christian devotion and welcomes all who seek to know God better.
Tim’s daily prayer for the Spirit’s renewing power is taken from the Apostle Paul:
I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
— Ephesians 3:16-19
