THIS I KNOW – GOD CREATED ME TO BE LIKE HIM

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness.”
Genesis 1:26a

I admit it. I have projects around the house that I have started and not finished. Truth be told, I will probably never finish some of them! I start something, get discouraged or get distracted, and do not see it through to completion. When God starts something He always finishes! Nothing is left dangling; there are no loose ends. This includes God’s eternal purpose for you and me! God is never put off or discouraged by weaknesses and failures. The apostle Paul assures us of God’s tenacity in working with us: “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). This is all brought about “according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will” (Ephesians 1:11).

Today’s scripture pictures God at the drawing board, so to speak, setting forth His eternal purpose for our lives: to make us like Him. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit resolve, “Let us make humankind in our image.” This is a project started, and a project that will be completed. God, who is love, longed to share His very life with us so He set about to make us like Him. Even when sin and rebellion broke out, God was not to be deterred. God sent His beloved Son Jesus to take on our sin and rebellion, imparting to us His very life. God did this so that we might “become participants in the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4c), fulfilling His purpose for us.

I know that God will complete what He has begun in me. God stays with it. I sometimes get discouraged and distracted, but God doesn’t. Through all of my ups and downs, God is carrying out His purpose to make me like Jesus. Scripture assures, “What we do know is this: when Christ is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is” (1 John 3:2b). From eternity past to eternity future God is working His purpose for me: I will be like Him and share His life and glory!
